In being an art educator, I seek to form individuals who are aware and receptive to the beauty in the everyday. I am just as much a learner as I am teacher, and I genuinely believe that I can glean valuable information from my students just as I have information to impart. A dialog of respect between my students and myself leads to a gain in valuable knowledge and understanding for all. My classroom exists as an immersive space for interactive, collaborative learning in which inspiration, creativity, and individuality are abundant. Instilling such skills as critical thinking, creative problem solving, and individual expression, I hope to inspire my students to become active members of their communities, using art as a means of dialog, understanding, and change.
I hope to inspire my students to be observers, explorers, creators, and thinkers. Careful, thoughtful considerations are an important elements of my personal artwork and something I hope to impart onto my students. I seek to facilitate personal learning, growth, and meaning-making within my students, and the art classroom is the perfect environment in which to accomplish this, where creative problem solving occurs, ideas are tested, philosophical dialog is engaged, and compelling works are created.
I am a natural organizer and a seeker of structure. I believe that these are necessary elements underlying any successful classroom. By keeping an underlying yet subtle structure to my classroom, I can allow my classes to flow and shift organically. Addressing art concepts as well as relevant social issues through philosophical discussion and art making, I hope to empower my students with the powers of art and creative practice to tackle social and personal issues. Through art education, I seek to equip my students with the tools to lead productive, creative, and fulfilling lives.
