The work of Livia Marin uses a variety of media. Personally, I find her Broken Things most compelling, in which she creates "spills" out of resin plaster to appear as if they are flowing out of a broken ceramic vessel. Aesthetically speaking I admire the delicate and fragile porcelain pieces she chooses, and her choice to then juxtapose these dainty items with unnatural "spills." The patterning from the porcelain is also carried over onto the spill, creating a dialog about patterning, fractured/whole, and utility/uselessness. Another intriguing piece of hers are her Fictions of a Use I, II, and III, in which countless sticks of lipstick are carved into different shapes. This project, when considered with Broken Pieces, seems to point out that another overarching theme in her work is mass-production and consumption, as well as obscuring of the familiar.
